Frequently asked questions

The Historical Dance Symposium

DSC 1829kl pngIn 2004, the 1st Rothenfels Dance Symposium was initiated by Markus Lehner and Uwe Schlottermüller. The inspiration for the Symposium came from the Arbeau Conference of 1988 in Burg Rothenfels and the international conference "Terpsichore 1450 - 1900" in Ghent. Burg Rothenfels am Main, for decades now one of the centres of historical dance in southern Germany, has proved to be an ideal conference location.

What was originally conceived as an event for a German public broadened out into a congress with an international flair, with a stream of dancers and scholars coming from all over Europe and beyond.

One central reason for the success of the conference is its special concept: under the motto "research dance - dance research", the central aim is to bring together dancers and scholars and thus enable an intensive exchange between current research and lived dance practice.

A conference for:

  • dancers, whether amateur or professional.   It offers you
    • numerous workshops in which to learn and discuss new dance interpretations or new styles
    • intensive contact and dialogue with leading dance experts from the whole of Europe
    • lectures with the most up-to-date research findings
    • artistic exchanges and inspiration via a variety of compact performances
    • dance evenings and a grand ball with live music for pleasure and shared social contacts

  • dance researchers, whether full-time or part-time. The symposium offers you
    • an outstanding platform for presenting your research findings to an international specialist audience with corresponding publication
    • intensive discussion with other researchers
    • a unique opportunity to examine current dance practice

  • scholars in musicology, art and culture etc. The conference offers
    • the opportunity to present your research work to an international public
    • the chance to establish personal contacts with leading dance researchers
    • the possibility to gain familiarity with dance of the various epochs live

Sharing life as a large group in the intimate atmosphere of Rothenfels Castle, dancing together and discussing, making new, personal contacts around the globe – all this cannot be replaced by a YouTube video or a facebook network: you simply have to experience it live!

2022 the symposium is organised for the first time by DANCE & HISTORY e.V. (chair: Markus Lehner) in cooperation with Burg Rothenfels.
