Approach via A3 from Frankfurt am Main or Munich, exit Marktheidenfeld, direction Lohr am Main
or via A7 from Kassel/Fulda or Ulm, exit Hammelburg

Parking is available at the castle.

By train:

The nearest train station is Lohr am Main. From Lohr train station, there is a shuttle bus to Lohr Central Bus Station (ZOB), from where you can continue on bus line 630 towards Marktheidenfeld. There are also buses from Würzburg to Marktheidenfeld (line 633). From there, change to Lohr am Main via Rothenfels (line 630).

Bus stop: Bergrothenfels village center, from there it is a 5-minute walk to the castle.
Bus stop: Rothenfels church, from there it is a 10-minute walk to the castle (climb the castle steps to the right behind the church, approx. 350 steps, not recommended with luggage).

You can arrange train (and bus) connections on the Deutsche Bahn website and book the corresponding tickets. The €9 monthly ticket valid in 2022 for regional trains and buses throughout Germany now costs €58 (price 2025). Depending on the ticket you choose, it may be cheaper than the sum of the individual tickets to and from Frankfurt Airport, for example.

Please note the poor bus connection to Lohr at the end of the conference, Sunday noon. The organization will therefore hire a bus (departure: approx. 13:30, arrival in Lohr, train station: approx. 14:10). Tickets can be purchased at the conference.

By plane:

The nearest airport is Frankfurt am Main (FRA). Other airports such as Nuremberg or Munich are less suitable. The low-cost airport Frankfurt-Hahn has very poor rail connections.

From there, numerous train connections are available to Lohr am Main (see above).
The journey time from Frankfurt to Burg Rothenfels takes approx. 2 - 3 hours, depending on the bus connection from Lohr.
