The Ball
Pleasure - Power - Politics
1600 - 1900

The ball, an almost universal social phenomenon, whether at princely courts, civic festivals or private celebrations, has presented itself in countless facets over the centuries.

Dedicated to the pleasure of dancing in a variety of forms and styles, the ball is also the setting for princely demonstrations of power, staged rituals, carefully regulated manners and the most favourable self-presentation possible. Last but not least, political and social developments, evolutions and revolutions are also reflected in the ballrooms of Europe.

Our journey through three centuries of dance history takes us through the ballrooms of Vienna, Dresden and Moscow, among others, and sheds light on the politics of the dance floor as well as cultural transfer across Europe. We follow the lives of dance masters who once filled the ballrooms and look at the various stagings of balls on stage.

Finally, workshops and dance evenings with the most popular ballroom dances, such as the minuet, allemande, contredanses and quadrilles, bring the atmosphere and lifestyle of these eras back to life.
