French Dances in Foreign descriptions: The Example of Johann Georg Pasch’s Anleitung sich bei grossen Herrn Höfen und anderen beliebt zu machen (1659)
(Hubert Hazebroucq)

The six dances, in J.G. Pasch’s Anleitung sich bei grossen Herrn Höfen und anderen beliebt zu machen (1659) show a prominent French influence. Several practical examples and comparisons with other sources of mid-seventeenth century social dancing will illustrate these convergences. Furthermore it is necessary to relate the terminology used by Pasch with his treatises about military and courtly exercises. His descriptions permit a thorough analysis of the adaptation and the appropriation of the French style in a German court context.

Hubert Hazebroucq, Paris, France:

Hubert Hazebroucq, dancer, choreographer and certified teacher for contemporary dance, is specialised since 1998 in Baroque and Renaissance Dances. He performs and collaborates particularly with L'Eclat des Muses, directed by Christine Bayle, Paris. In 2008 he founded his own dance company Les Corps Eloquents. He plays an active part within the research society ACRAS in their research  on 18th century German dance treatises, and has received a research grant from the French Ministry of Culture for his research on social dancing about 1660, and in particular for an analysis of Pasch’s Anleitung.
