By train:

The nearest station is Lohr am Main. From there there is a bus connection to Rothenfels. There are also buses coming from Würzburg to Rothenfels via Marktheidenfeld.

Bus stop: Bergrothenfels Ortsmitte, 5 minutes walk from the castle.
Bus stop: Kirche Rothenfels, 10 minutes walk from the castle (via the steps up to the castle).

You can select connections for train (and bus) on the homepage of the Deutsche Bahn and book the relevant tickets.

9-Euro-Ticket: From June 1, you can book a super-cheap ticket that is valid until the end of June on all German public transport, including regional rail services. It is also valid for the bus line Lohr - Bergrothenfels and for regional train connections, e.g. to Frankfurt and Würzburg. All details here.

Please note the bad bus connection to Lohr am Main on the Sunday afternoon at the end of the conference. Our organisational team will schedule a bus (departure c. 13:30, arrival at Lohr: c. 14:10). The 9-Euro-Ticket is not valid for this bus.

By plane:

The nearest airport is Frankfurt am Main (FRA). Other airports such as Nuremberg or Munich are less suitable. The low-price airport Frankfurt-Hahn has a very poor connection to the train system.

In Frankfurt there are numerous train connections to Lohr am Main (see above).
The total journey time from Frankfurt is 2 - 3 hours, depending on the bus connection from Lohr.

5th Historical Dance Symposium
Burg Rothenfels am Main
15 - 19 June 2022

Conference activities

The symposium comprises 14 lectures, 8 research poster presentations, 6 workshops, 3 compact performances, 3 dance evenings and a festive ball. In the mornings, the lectures take place, in the afternoons the workshops are held, while the evenings provide time for compact performances and dance evenings.

To enable more intensive working, participants in the workshops are divided into three groups, for the dance evenings into two groups. As the workshops and dance evenings are repeated several times, it will be possible for each participant to attend all workshops and dance evenings.

On Saturday evening, a festive ball takes place (costumes of the period from c. 1780 - 1840 are very welcome). The basis of the ball programme is provided by the choreographies of the preceding dance evenings and by simple dances for all from the epoch in question. A special highlight is the live musical accompaniment by the symposium’s music ensemble.

Conference location

2006 0507Rothenfels0017 kl

The conference centre Burg Rothenfels (Rothenfels Castle) has been a centre for religious and cultural learning for almost a hundred years. For decades, it has provided a home for historical dance and has thus become an established name for many dancers and dance groups in Germany.
The fortress structure, whose oldest parts date from the 12th century, furthermore offers an inspiring, atmospheric setting.

The castle lies directly on the Main between Würzburg and Frankfurt, 7 km north of Marktheidenfeld.

The body responsible for the castle is the "Vereinigung der Freunde von Burg Rothenfels. e.V.".

Renovation work at Burg Rothenfels:

Several years ago, serious damage to the roof truss of the castle's main wing was discovered, necessitating a multi-year renovation of the building. Originally, the work was to begin immediately after the 2020 Symposium. However, like the symposium, there were delays due to the pandemic.
As things stand, work is not scheduled to begin until the week after the symposium, but possibly a few days earlier. First of all, some excavation work is planned on the outside of the east tower as well as in the cellar of the main wing under the dining hall and the Rittersaal. If the work actually starts earlier, we cannot rule out construction noise in this area on Thursday and Friday, but have worked out solutions for this case.

During the conference, there will be a large crane in the inner courtyard of the castle, the sports field will be converted into a construction site access road, most of the parking spaces at the castle will be closed, but there are alternative options on the outskirts of the town.
